You’d think that young people always tend to be energetic, loud, revolutionary, rebellious even. Yet, in recent years, an alarming percentage of our youth adopts a sedentary lifestyle while at the same time, they don’t have the appropriate healthy eating habits that they should. This modern-day plight of the young is due to a lot of reasons. First and foremost, they are accustomed to mostly passive entertainment (yes, such as the two obvious ones, that is, television and the Internet) and therefore, they have gotten used to being simply the spectators. Their time is almost full of other demands. School and after-school activities can take too much of their time, without necessarily bringing results. You see, there is a lack of equipment in most homes because of its high costs; and as for the school facilities, those are definitely inadequate. Generally, young people have acquired neither the habit of exercising regularly nor that of paying attention to what or how they eat. Actually, they usually complain that nutritious foods are less tasty.

Despite its many causes, however, there are several workable solutions to the problem. As it happens with every problem that concerns young people, the easiest way to go is through the parents and the teachers. Firstly, experts could get invited to give talks at schools to promote health consciousness. Then, the parents should become effective role models for their children and give them all the positive encouragement they may need. They should equally help them learn to have healthy dietary habits by being an example themselves. After all, it is the parents who can draw their attention every day to the nutritional values of all foods. Besides that, they can experiment with new recipes and make the whole process more exciting and interesting for the children. As for the “bad” taste of healthy food, that’s only true if you don’t eat it mindfully; it’s only true if you haven’t tried many options; it’s only true if you don’t know an adequate number of enviable recipes that would make you immediately change your diet into a healthier one.

Obviously, the result of such initiatives would be nothing less than healthier and happier children, which is what all sane people dream of. In my opinion, the most vital role is that of the parents. Because they care the most, about their children, the latter’s health must be a primary concern.

    We parents should teach our children to have healthy eating habits. Parents mainly fail doing so because they don’t eat healthy themselves nor have any other healthy habits their children can mimic.
